Healing Our Core Issues

Healing Our Core Issues (HOCI) was created in September 2013 by Jan Bergstrom, M.Ed, LMHC, SEP, and Dr. Rick Butts, LPCC-S, SEP. Informed by body-based methodologies, mindfulness, attachment theory, core issues work, and neuroscience, this integrative model focuses on treating developmental and relational trauma from childhood.
HOCI identifies five pillars of a functional adult:

  - Grounding in the body

  - The practice of mindfulness

  - Living in the middle of the six core issues

  - Reparenting historical parts using validation, affirmation, nurturing, and limit-setting

  - Connecting to a higher power

The process of healing the six core issues involves:

1.  Inherent Value: Recognizing value as a birthright and learning to love oneself equally to others.

2.  Vulnerability and Boundaries: Learning how to protect oneself.

3.  Knowing the Self: Owning the reality of being human and imperfect.

4.  Needs and Wants: Identifying personal needs and wants to better practice self-care.

5.  Moderation: Cultivating moderation, spontaneity, and joy.

6.  Attachment: Examining relationship patterns to grow in connection with oneself.

This model is built on the scientific research of leading mental health experts, including Pia Mellody, Peter Levine, Dan Siegel, Stephen Porges, Jon Kabat-Zinn, John Bowlby, and Phillip Shaver.
